Floor Tom End Tables

I purchased the shells used for $30. After making a bass drum ottoman, my wife suggested making an end table. I have an awesome wife, I know. Fortunately the floor toms were the same size so I decided to make 2 end tables.

Drum shells before working on them (including the bass drum). Shells 2 01.jpg After removing the wrap I used a belt sander to sand off the glue that held the wrap on. One of the floor toms looks like an add-on because it has a different color and I later found out that the holes for the legs were different (non-standard) so I later drilled 3 new holes for the floor tom brackets. Shells 2 02.jpg I ran a PVC pipe through the shells to suspend them to stain them in my pole barn so I could just leave them hang out to dry. Shells 2 03.jpg Here they are with their first coat of dark walnut stain. I learned to cover the floor tom bracket holes with blue painters tape to prevent the stain from bleeding through (after doing the bass drum ottoman). Shells 2 04.jpg This is a shot of the shells after the second coat of stain. Shells 2 05.jpg Just another angle. It's amazing how lighting affects things. Shells 2 06.jpg The floor toms are 16 inches (wide). Luckily the local hardware store had round wood discs that were 18 inches. I added rubber stoppers to the bottom of the table top like I did on the bass drum ottoman to hold it in place but also be removable. Shells 2 07.jpg The finished product with new Gibraltar floor tom brackets and legs at a cost of $40 for each drum. We like that you can raise and lower the legs. I haven't played on the end tables with sticks...yet. Shells 2 08.jpg Here are both end tables and the bass drum ottoman in their new home. Shells 2 09.jpg Here I temporarily used one of the small toms as a laptop stand. Shells 2 11.jpg 2 toms and the snare with new Gibraltar floor tom brackets and legs finished to match the floor toms. I decided to do 2 coats of stain on the top piece and polyurethane them. Shells 2 13.jpg Close up of one of the toms. Shells 2 14.jpg I liked the polyurethane so much that I went back and added a 2nd coat of stain to the tops of the floor tom end tables and added 2 coats of stain to them and the bass drum ottoman. Here's the whole family, brought back together again. Shells 2 15.jpg Close up of the snare. Shells 2 16.jpg Another shot of the snare. Shells 2 17.jpg Floor tom and rack tom. Shells 2 18.jpg Bird's eye view. Shells 2 19.jpg Another look from above. Shells 2 20.jpg Final shot before splitting the drums up to move to their new home, 2 floor toms were moved to the entertainment room (i.e. movie theater), the rest stayed in this room and the blanket was hidden once again in the bass drum ottoman.
