Cymbal Garden (2020)

A friend sent me a photo where someone else took their cymbals and put them outside so when it rains you can hear the shimmer as the rain hits the cymbals. I had some old cymbals laying around so I decided to give it a shot. I decided to use sticks to hold the cymbals. Below is the progression of the project.

Cymbal on a stick with no treatment

Here's a cracked, no name cymbal

A couple of friends recommended treating the cymbals with clear paint or turtle wax; 3 of the cymbals already looked bad so I opted to paint them with a brass/gold spraypaint, but I ended up not liking the look

I painted the cracked cymbal with clear spray paint

Since the brass/gold paint looked so bad, I painted 3 of the cymbals again with red, then blue spray paint using painters tape and a garbage bag to cover parts of the cymbals while painting them; I also painted the sticks (i.e. cymbal holders)

I printed out 2 sizes of stars and used a razor knife to cut them out to use as templates; here's the big one

Here are both star templates

I went patriotic, the stars aren't perfect but I like how they look

Here are all 3 of the patriotic styled cymbals

Why not have patriotic styled cymbal holders too

The cracked/clear coated cymbal went to a friend; here is what I have in my garden

I hope they grow and have lots of baby Zildjian cymbals
