Salt Water Taffy by Grandma (Karen) Oller

Ingredients

• 1 c. Sugar
• 3/4 c. Light corn syrup
• 2/3 c. Water
• 2 Tbsp. Butter
• 1 Tbsp. Corn starch
• 1/2 tsp. Salt
• 2 tsp. Vanilla or other flavoring

Grandma used to make this with her students in class.

Directions

• Butter a baking pan.
• In a 2 qt. Saucepan, combine all ingredients except flavoring.
• Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly to 256 degrees on a candy thermometer (or until small amount of mixture dropped into very cold water forms a hard ball).
• Remove pan from heat and stir in flavoring.
• Stir into the buttered pan.
• When cool enough to handle, butter your hands lightly and pull taffy until satiny, light in color and stiff.
• Pull into long strips.
• With buttered scissors, cut into 1 inch pieces.
• Wrap pieces individually in waxed paper. Candy must be wrapped to hold it's shape.
• Place in airtight container until ready to eat.
