What is MyCard?

MyCard is a conglomeration of PHP programs, in the top level "MyCard" folder. It is a fully web-based system using standards where anyone who knows how to code PHP and is given access to edit code on the server, could be a MyCard programmer. The system was created in 1999 by Steve Thole and Kirk Hopkins. The hardware was a PC that sat under Steve's desk and was setup with Linux, PHP, and PostgreSQL. Initially, it wasn't called MyCard. "Web Cardholder Statements" were created from data dumps from the ID card system (Harco). A login page was created. Students could login to see their cardholder statement. Prior to this solution, multiple programs were written to import the data, a very lengthy MS Word mail merge was run, coordination was made with the print center, and statements were printed at the print center and mailed via campus mail.

In 2000, Steve developed the "Overtime" system with a separate login, to allow HDGS (at the time) staff to be called systematically for overtime. As part of the overtime system, an "Employee Database" was created to track employee information. This was used in conjunction with the Overtime system. Overtime requests (when and where a staff member would work) were entered by Cook Place staff into the system.

In 2001, Steve and Kirk developed a "MyAccount" system, with a separate login, to allow incoming students to see information about their roommate, their hall, and the campus. Data was imported from the housing system (CBORD's HMS, based on MS FoxPro) on a daily basis. Assignment letters were snail mailed with basic information about their assignment, with a web address to login and see more.

In 2002, "MyCard" was named. The 3 separate logins came together as one system, the separate logins were consolidated. The system got a new look and feel with a portal/home page.

In 2003, after growing tired of waiting for the next version of HMS to come out, MyCard was expanded to allow staff to change room information and other things for students. The HMS system was outdated and tech staff were continually being asked to write programs to manipulate data and provide reports that HMS did not provide. MyCard grew organically, ultimately replacing the HMS system.

MyCard had become the solution, the hammer in the tool belt, for tech staff. It was ahead of its', being a web solution. It still far surpasses other systems at the tail end of 2017. CSGold, for example, is a large system but still uses a legacy windows app (called the GUI), as they work to develop web-based solutions (WebCardCenter, GET, and others).
