Discussion of web sites from our class
http://www.amazon.com- Goal of the site: buy stuff, subscribe to their membership
- Sign in: no, unless you want to save things (lists) and make your life easier
- Target: anyone that likes to buy things
- What do you like about it: convenient and fast (to find things), user friendly, suggestive selling, customer service
- What could be better: less clutter, product organization (related to your physical location - highlight local products)
- What is bad: sketchy products sometimes (meet expectations, off-brand), could add curated tabs similar to NetFlix, product organization, could be more minimalistic, aesthetics, remembers searches-leave me alone
- Describe the design: busy
- Devices: laptops - use the app on your smartphone/different style (not responsive design) on your smartphone - firestick to use with your TV
- How and when is it used: anytime
https://www.columbuszoo.org/- Goal of the site: encourages you to visit the zoo, apply to work their, book an event, donate, buy tickets
- Sign in: no
- Target: people in Columbus, visitors from other areas
- What do you like about it: sleek, readability, cute animal pictures
- What could be better: add videos, some text gets cut off, more consistent font scheme (1 or 2 types is a good design principle)
- What is bad: dropdown menu too thick
- Describe the design: nice color scheme, overwhelming amount of information
- Devices: responsive design pretty good, a couple minor issues
- How and when is it used: anytime
http://miamioh.edu/- Goal of the site: attract future students and parents, look cool
- Sign in: not to the public site, yes to myMiami
- Target: attract future students and parents, current students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors
- What do you like about it: easy to navigate, search bar, color scheme (Miami's color scheme)
- What could be better: order of items on the page, get lost after leaving the home page
- What is bad: nothing too terrible
- Describe the design: clean with a lot of words (pretty good balance), good for a college site
- Devices: responsive design
- How and when is it used: when high school students start looking at colleges
