Discussion of web sites from our class
https://www.apple.com- Goal of the site: Show off new products, sell new products, customer support, be ahead of the competition, easy to find stuff, maintain their brand, show everything they have to offer
- Sign in: no
- Target: Everyone, younger (13-40 or 50), current customers, teaser's to find out more
- What do you like about it: aesthetics, clear visual hierarchy, good use of white space
- What could be better: not inviting (could have more info), make it easier to know what to do (what does the apple do?)
- What is bad: top menu looks different than the rest of the page
- Describe the design: modern
- Devices: yes
- How and when is it used: anytime, looking for a new product
http://www.bestbuy.com- Goal of the site: sell products, introduce products that you might not know you needed
- Sign in: to purchase
- Target: present purchasers, 50-60 year olds, family income below $80,000 (saving money is the main theme), price tag logo, competing with other retail stores - not Apple, teenager and up (present ideas for mom and dad)
- What do you like about it: sales, featured product on their home page, current products displayed, blue color unifies the site
- What could be better: ugly, hard to find stuff, 'goodwill' of a website, 2000's style, font
- What is bad: too many blue's, menu/navigation system doesn't make sense
- Describe the design: 2000's
- Devices: no - mobile site
- How and when is it used: buy stuff (presents), know what you want already (price shopping), product brand/model comparison
https://www.buzzfeed.com- Goal of the site: click bait (ads, virus), sharing stories, links to related stories, time-killer
- Sign in: no
- Target: teenagers, everyone
- What do you like about it: typography
- What could be better: unclutter, why would you want to go back to the old page?
- What is bad: 1 navigation bar (they have 4), autoplaying videos (with sound)
- Describe the design: bad
- Devices: yes, and they also have an app
- How and when is it used: bored
http://www.theexchange.com/- Goal of the site: buy, sell, trade - music, movies, games, and more
- Sign in: no
- Target: nostalgic gamers
- What do you like about it: white space, ok pictures (framed similarly)
- What could be better: show prices, change 'more' to 'location' which is what it is, logo doesn't match the site
- What is bad: search bar, no idea what's in stock
- Describe the design: minimal/modern
- Devices: no
- How and when is it used: to find their location
